Discipleship | Lesson 6 | Devotion 2

Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

If you’ve ever played sports or competed in anything, victory is very uncertain. Any given night anyone can win. It takes hard work and practice to ensure a victory. Even on their best nights, any team or individual can be beaten. This is what makes athletics so exciting. Wouldn’t it be great to know that you were going to win? As a player or even a coach, this would instill so much confidence into your actions and practice.

As we already discovered, the Lord promised that He would build the church. It is the Lord’s responsibility to see that His church be built. Not only did Christ promise the construction of the church, but He also made a promise to the continuation of the church when He said,       “and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” He guaranteed victory for the church over the power of Satan.

We live in uncertain times. We live in a culture where the current seems to be turning against the church and Christianity. This can be discouraging and defeating for Christians. Thankfully, our hope is not in our acceptance by the world or our effective strategies. Our hope is found in the fact that Jesus Christ promised that the gates of Hell would not defeat us! Basically, we are guaranteed the victory.

How do we ensure that the church is victorious? We become a part of the continuation by growing spiritually and sharing the Gospel with others! Christ already gave us the promise, it our job to do the work and allow Him to bless it!
