Discipleship | Lesson 7 | Devotion 2

I Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

In almost every arena of life there will be opposition. Sometimes, this opposition can become our enemy. To properly defeat and become victorious over an enemy, you must become knowledgeable of their tactics, methods, motives, and more.

Our Christian life is no different. We have an enemy who opposes everything that we do. The Bible gives us insight into the tactics and motives and methods of Satan for a reason. If we fail to properly understand our enemy, we cannot properly defend ourselves.

Satan wants to destroy you. He wants you to become a casualty in the war against good and evil. He will use whatever means and method to cause you to lose your testimony, to become unfaithful, or back away from your faith in Christ completely.

It is difficult to defeat an enemy that you cannot see. It is even more difficult to defeat an enemy that you do not know. According to the verse we just read, there are two steps to being prepared for the attacks of Satan:

Be sober

To be sober is “to be calm and collected.” So many Christians are unstable in their faith which causes a lack of stability in general. When we are strong in our faith, we trust God in the circumstances which we have been placed. Because we know God is in control, we can be “calm and collected” in the face of our enemy.

Be vigilant

The best way to prepare for an attack is to know when one is coming. As a Christian, you can never let your guard down. You can never slack in walking in the Spirit or daily surrender to God’s will. For some, you may need to recognize when you are most susceptible to temptation. God always gives us a way out of sin according to I Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man:but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

As you seek to live in light of eternity, we must keep in mind that there is still a daily battle here on earth. As we seek to remain sober and vigilant in the fight, we can prepare for the attacks of the enemy.
