Discipleship | Lesson 4 | Devotion 1
I John 1:1-4 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
There are very few experiences in life that we never get over. In fact, many can count those experiences on one hand. It may have been the birth of a child or a wedding anniversary. It may have been something negative like a sickness or the date of a family member’s death. Many times, the experiences that we “never get over” change the direction of our lives which is what makes them so memorable. We cannot continue functioning normally following these events.
When you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, it was a memorable event. Sadly, like most things in life, some Christians seem to have gotten over their salvation. The passage above was written by one of the disciples of Christ named John. He had seen Jesus with his own eyes and gotten to experience Him like many did not. Years later, John writes that the book of I John is intended to show readers Jesus Christ. Why would he want to do this? Look at verse four, “And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.”
John was someone who had never gotten over what Jesus Christ had done in his life. He’s writing to Christians to show them they can have the same joy. How do we ensure that we are a Christian who’s never gotten over what Jesus Christ did for us? We continue to learn more about the One who saved us. The only way we learn more about Jesus is through His Word. As you think about the salvation of your soul, don’t get over what God has done for you. It’s an experience that changes the rest of your life!
